Hello, and welcome back to our blog!
Have you ever noticed fish sleeping in your fish tank or aquarium?
You probably haven’t. Adam and I could not either (we have 30 liters / 8 gallons aquarium). Curious about it, we decided to learn more about how our fish sleep.
We found out that fish do not sleep how we usually imagine someone sleeping.
The reason is that fish do not sleep as humans or other land animals do.
However, the same as we do, most fish must rest to be ready for the next day.
They do that by floating in place or wedging themselves into a secure spot in the mud, grass, coral, or some decoration you put in the aquarium.
Fish sleep is a sort of sleep where they reduce their activity and metabolism while remaining alert to potential dangers.
This usually happens by putting half of their brain and most body functions to sleep so they can rest and recover. Similar to what dolphins and sharks do – check our articles and video about it here: Top facts about dolphins and Facts about sharks.
Once one side of the brain is rested, the second half gets to rest and prepare for the next day.
Not perfect, but good enough for the fish. At least we never heard them complaining about it 😉
